Healthy Media
Girls are bombarded by hundreds of media images and messages everyday. This impacts their physical, emotional, and social health. Unfortunately, many of these messages damage girls' self-esteem and limit their choices of positive role models to follow.
As a leading voice for girls, Girl Scouts calls on girls, parents, educators, communities, and local and national policymakers to acknowledge the impact media has on today's girls. We invite you to to join with us in supporting, promoting, and advocating for more positive and healthier media options.
A few staggering statistics to consider...
- 47% of girls say fashion magazines give them the body image to strive for.
- 65% of American girls and women struggle with an eating disorder.
- 67% of girls today want to be leaders, but only 1 in 5 believes she has the skill or ability to lead.
